About The Architect
Westview Country Club - Miami, FL
In 1999, Westview Country Club had reached a point where the members either had to rebuild their historic landmark property or close the doors. The club assessed the members enough to buy the land outright and then provide golf course architect Kipp Schulties with 2 million dollars to try and pump some life back into the worn down golf course during the summer of 2000.
“From an economic standpoint I am most proud of what we accomplished at Westview,” says Schulties, who was called upon when Westview CC members decided to redesign their golf course rather than close it down. The $2 million they gave Schulties for a complete makeover of the 18-hole Dick Wilson layout, may be, dollar for dollar, the best use of money spent on a golf course in the Miami area. The site of Al Capone’s Florida hangout, Westview now boasts a high-caliber, stand-alone golf course with a nearly full membership.
While there is still much more to accomplish at Westview over the long term, the club is back on firm ground. During the fall of 2007, the Club had Schulties draw up a new master plan to create a long term plan that would address the balance of the areas around (and between) the golf course that could not be addresed due funding reasons in the year 2000 project. The outlook for Westview is much brighter and there is now a path on which the club plans to travel to return it to the status of a premier Miami golf and country club destination.
